Ok. So I don't know how to sail

Literally, I have no idea. Sure, I used to work on boats, so I know some knots and port from starboard. I can read a nautical chart... or at least I used to know how to read a nautical chart. But when it comes to sailing, I really don’t have a clue.

That’s part of the fun of this mission.

Not only will I be contributing to cutting-edge research on microplastics, but I’ll also be learning how to sail. Learning new skills is one of the best ways to expand the mind. I grew up playing soccer, and I often say, “Everything I need to know, I learned through soccer.” I have a feeling sailing will offer its own set of life lessons and metaphors, carried in on wind and saltwater.

Throughout this mission, I’ll be writing about my personal journey of learning to sail. I already know this will become a lifelong hobby. More than anything, I hope this experience inspires other women to take risks, sail into the unknown, and maybe even apply to join their own eXXpedition.
